Fantastic little router! Super easy to set up, with strong connectivity and a clean, user-friendly interface. I’m using it with ExpressVPN, and it works flawlessly. It also handles hotel and public Wi-Fi portals really well — no issues logging in through captive portals.One great bonus: it can be powered directly from my laptop, which makes it perfect for travel.Excellent value for money if you need a reliable travel or VPN router. The Beryl AX by GL.iNet is a fast, secure travel router packed with useful features. It’s great for both privacy-conscious travelers and power users.Things I like about it...VPN Cascading Clarification:I initially misunderstood the cascading VPN feature. It doesn't let you connect to both your home VPN and a commercial VPN simultaneously for accessing home resources while staying private. Instead, it allows you to run your own VPN server on one router and route its traffic through a commercial VPN. To make use of this feature, you’d need two Beryl AX routers: one set up at home as a VPN server and the other used while traveling to connect to it. This way, when connected to your home router remotely, your browsing exits via the commercial VPN—a handy feature, just not what I expected.Privacy & Tracking Prevention:I’ve set the router’s Wi-Fi to a hidden SSID with a random BSSID (MAC address) that changes on each boot. While hiding the SSID isn’t bulletproof, combining it with a random BSSID helps reduce tracking—great for frequent travelers.Configurable VPN Switch:I assigned the router’s physical side switch to toggle the VPN. This allows me to turn it off for trusted networks like work and enable it for public Wi-Fi at hotels or cafes to protect against malicious users.Custom Firewall Rule for Tethering:To maximize speed when tethering from my phone, I added this custom rule in the advanced firewall settings: iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING 1 -j TTL --ttl-set 66Versatile Internet Sources:I’ve configured the router to quickly connect to multiple internet sources—home Wi-Fi, work Wi-Fi, or my phone’s hotspot—based on availability.Advanced Privacy for Journalists:In regions where VPNs are banned, enabling Tor mode on the Beryl AX router can help establish a stable "randomised location" connection to the internet. You can then use your preferred no-logs VPN on your laptop or phone (set to TCP mode to ensure it can connect over tor) for an added layer of security. This setup ensures your data remains protected, even if you encounter a malicious Tor exit node. For travelers or journalists in restrictive environments, this approach can provide reliable access while maintaining privacy. Remember to follow "privacy best practices" to safeguard your online activities.Stable Connections: A standout feature is the ability to manually lock the router to a single BSSID when connecting to Wi-Fi networks. This stops it from jumping between access points, providing a stable connection. It solved issues I had with the router reconnecting unpredictably in my home wifi environment and it's easy to do!At-Home Use: While designed for travel, this router also works extremely well as a home Wi-Fi extender or for other purposes. I have a Marble at home I am going to replace with another Beryl AX when it arrives tomorrow, which serves secure, isolated guest wifi that is enforced with Mullvad multihop VPN so that if I let strangers like sales people giving us quotes or other random "untrusted" people access to the wifi because we are in a bad signal area, their actions online have no connection to our internet and their wacky browsing habits do not impact the advertising we see on our own devices, because their browsing is done over the VPN.Verdict:The Beryl AX is incredibly versatile, offering advanced privacy options, customizable features, and reliable performance. Whether you’re a frequent traveller, journalist, or just tech-savvy, I HIGHLY recommend it. The Wireguard increased speeds was a big selling point for me. The Opal model, while cost-effective really was lacking in the VPN speed department. I wholeheartedly recommend this Beryl AX!! If I could give it 6 stars I would... I love gl.inet

I needed network access to my portable hard drive as my EE router no longer has this feature. This works very well but the setup isn't intuitive. As this is a router with all sorts of network uses, if you are network savvy then this would be no problem to setup I assume. It really needs a guided setup but there are lots of online resources to help and with a bit of trial and error I got it working in about half an hour for my specific needs.The range of this little guy is very impressive. I can pick it up anywhere in my home and get a very fast connection. It's stable and reliable so far.The build quality is very good and solid. It's compact and has a decent amount of port connections, including the all important USB 3 port that I needed to for network storage.If you are tech savvy then this is a great little mini router and reasonably priced too.

It’s incredibly convenient when I want to switch between secure browsing and regular internet use.Security is another strong point the ability to block non-VPN traffic. Plus, the open-source firmware lets me customize settings to my exact needs, which I still haven't used but love to know it's there.All in all, this router is incredibly versatile, easy to set up, and perfect for anyone needing fast, secure internet on the go. I had high hopes for the GL.iNet Beryl AX, but it turned out to be a huge letdown—especially when I needed it most. During a recent trip, it constantly threw the error: “Please check the network environment or reboot the device.” This wasn’t just a one-off; it happened repeatedly and made it nearly impossible to get a stable connection.I tried everything:Factory resetUpgraded and downgraded firmwareSwapped multiple power cablesTried different wall sockets and power banksNothing helped. On top of that, the device would randomly crash and reboot, sometimes without warning. This router was meant to be a reliable travel companion, but instead, it caused more stress than it solved. It completely ruined my ability to work and stay connected while away.When it does work, performance is fine—but reliability is a dealbreaker. Until there's a proper fix, I can’t recommend the Beryl AX for anyone who needs dependable connectivity, especially while traveling.
